Its very sunny. Many species are distinguishable from the noises they make but aren’t actually visible. Boreal Chorus frogs make their breeding calls. A ruffed grouse is thumping its wings territorially at an intruder into its vicinity, trying to force it to leave. A mallard duck quacks from the marsh. There are blackbirds, magpies, crows, and flickers, who tolerate each others’ presence. A few robins perch in the aspens. Some new growth is beginning to sprout, like Hairy Clematis, Elk thistle, strawberries, prairie smoke, and cone flowers. The red sprouts from earlier have revealed their telltale leaves—they are Sticky Geranium plants. The bark of one aspen has been scraped off, possibly by an elk. New scat piles have been left by the moose. A light dusting of snow begins to coat the bare ground. Ten different species were in the area, along with many from before.
